little Christmas

There are many levels to my oblivion.
Last night I was on a whole different level of oblivion, but that I can cross off my list now. After eight years of living in Finland I am no longer a Pikkujoulu virgin. I was a bit wary, since the authentic Finnish Pikkujoulu (Little Christmas) is supposed to be… well… wild… to state it politically correct.

One reason for me being wary was the theme. I don’t mind dressing up in a suit, but dressing up in funny ways (like for example Halloween) just doesn’t really float my boat. Last night’s theme was the 70s, and although I’m a 70s boy (or well, I’m actually an 80s boy, but born in the 70s) I don’t have anything left from the 70s. So I trailed to the “halloween”-store to find some props and gave it a go anyway. And guess what, it was more fun than I expected. I wasn’t super-dressed up, and the wig itched like hell, and that long hair (of which I probably ate half) was a pain in the neck (literally) and in my face all the time, but I think I pulled it off.

The other one was that I’ve basically heard mostly horror stories about these kind of parties where everyone gets flat wasted, everyone does it with everyone, and everyone is ok with it. Last night, however, was a totally mellow, laid back party. Sure there was alcohol, and sure people drank some of it, but unless they hid it well, I didn’t see anyone get wasted, I didn’t do it with anyone, nor did I see anyone do it with anyone else (although also that might’ve been hidden 😀 ).
The people were just great and even if I haven’t been working on a larger scale for a long time, yet, with this company, they took me in like I’ve been there forever.
It was absolutely great. After-party continued downtown and ended in the wee hours of the night.

So much for my Friday night of “networking” as my Better Half would call it.
Thanks, people, for an excellent night and for making my first real Finnish Pikkujoulu one never to forget 🙂
